Amateur Radio provides communications support for the March of Dimes

The Martin County Amateur Radio Association club provided communications support for the March of Dimes "March for Babies" 2009 event. About a dozen local ham operators assisted using their own equipment and volunteering their saturday to a worthy cause.

Amateur Radio operators were posted along the event route and at official waypoints to provide communications assistance in case any of the walkers had an issue requiring assistance. The "hams" participated in a controlled "net" with a central net control operator who was in direct contact with the organizers. This event is one of many services provided by local hams each year as a way to keep their operating skills up to the task of emergency deployments in the wake of events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, or even terrorist activities.

Amateur radio is an exciting hobby open to people of all ages and skill levels. While this event featured local communications, hams may communicate with people all over the world using modest equipment and antennas.  The local Martin County clubs sponsor several classes each year for those wishing to enter the hobby as well as providing local support via experienced hams (we call them "Elmers") who are willing to help a new licensee get started with ham radio.  One other note- you no longer need to learn Morse code to get a license, and the entry level "Technician" license is easier then ever to get.
