Digital Radio Modes covered at meeting
At the July 2008 meeting of the MCARA at the Morgade Library we explored the subject of Digital Voice on Amateur Radio via the excellent video produced by Gary Pearce, KN4AQ. The entire production runs almost an hour so we missed the last few minutes of the show but got a good exposure to some real life applications of Digital Radio Mondiale (via WinDRM) and FDMDV, the AOR Fastmodem, and a couple others in use on HF, and the ICOM D-Star system in use on VHF and up bands. It is a lot of stuff to take in for one sitting, so a section of it will likely be repeated again at a future meeting.
Some of the people in the video also include Greg Sarratt, W4OZK, ARRL Southeastern Division Director (a D-Star advocate whom you may have met at the 2008 Martin County Hamfest) and Mel Whitten, K0PFX who has a station to be envied by most hams.
Will Digital Voice replace SSB on the HF bands? Perhaps not anytime soon- but it certainly looks like a good fit on some of the VHF and up bands.
This video is part of our MCARA library now. If you would like to get your own copy or preview part of the video visit www.arvideonews.com - 73 to all who contributed to the production.
We would also like to thank Andy Morgade for attending the club meeting- you may note a connection with the Library's name. :-) If you would like to learn more about becoming a ham please feel free to drop in to a meeting. All are welcome. Please check the club Events Calendar for testing sessions and upcoming activities.
